Our relation to systems of value (whether social, cultural, spiritual, economic, political, creative, or ethical) is twofold in the sense that we are simultaneously produced by them yet also act as the agents of their reproduction; it is through us that value transitions from the abstract to the concrete; our bodies serve as the stage upon which the existing world is either reified or resisted. It is in this sense that we are not merely beings-in-the-world, but also beings-of-the-world, or (for further clarification at the expense of brevity) beings-of-which-the-world-is-composed.

If we truly desire to bring new worlds into being, we must confront the existing world at its place of origin and, in its place, instate a reconstituted system of value(s). Therefore, to draw critical attention to the fundamental contradictions in the existing systems of value or to conceive of alternative modes of being are not simply theoretical exercises, but potentially radical acts with the capacity to transfigure the world of which we are a part
